WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Third-Party Votes Only Help Trump

Washington, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action highlights opinion pieces from across the country highlighting the dangers of third-party candidates and encouraging voters to support Kamala Harris. The leaders lay out the stakes that any vote for Jill Stein or another third-party candidate could pave the way for Donald Trump and his MAGA allies to enact their dangerous Project 2025 plan.

In 2016, Stein’s vote totals in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin alone were enough to sink Hillary Clinton’s campaign. We cannot allow that to happen again.

Butch Hollowell, first African-American chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party for Detroit Metro Times: Third-party candidates could hand Michigan — and the country — back to Trump

Just as in 2016, third-party candidates threaten to muddle the results this year and hand Trump the win. Just as in 2016, Michigan is key to the outcome. And as Michiganders we must come together, vote, and advocate for the Harris-Walz ticket, and make sure Donald Trump never gets near the levers of power ever again.

In 2016, a razor-thin margin of just 10,000 Michiganders helped hand Donald Trump the presidency. Perennial third-party candidate Jill Stein got 50,000, meaning she likely cost Hillary Clinton a win. Stein’s back on the Michigan ballot again this year, along with Cornel West and other third-party spoilers.

Jill Stein’s campaign is being boosted by the Russians — and by Donald Trump himself, who has said, “Jill Stein, I like her very much … You know why? She takes 100% from [Democrats].” As for Cornel West, he’s got Republican operatives working for him in state after state. These shady figures aren’t pushing for third party candidates because they believe in their visions — they’re doing it for Trump. And even though the conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has dropped out of the race, he’ll still be on our ballots. A vote for him, or any other third-party candidate, is worse than a waste: it pushes Trump closer to victory.

Rep. Francesca Hong for Wisconsin State Journal: A vote for Jill Stein is a path to another Donald Trump presidency

So it cannot be overstated that there are two paths on Election Day that will undoubtedly lead to a Trump presidency: a vote for Trump or a vote for Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Only one path — a vote for Vice President Kamala Harris — will help advance a progressive agenda that supports working families, lifts small businesses and promotes economic justice.

Every four years, Stein emerges from obscurity to run for president, doing little in the interim to help the communities she claims to care about. She abandoned us in 2016, in 2020 and will undoubtedly do it again this year.

Only one candidate can beat Trump, and she is Harris.

The sobering reality is that for Palestine, climate justice, racial equality and all the other issues that matter to us as leftists and as humans, we can only organize under a Harris administration. Under a Trump presidency, some of us might not even survive.

We cannot afford to vote for Stein.

Wa’el Alzayat from Emgage Political Action for Salon: Palestinians can’t afford a protest vote: Muslim and Arab American voters must make their choice

Despite the immense pain and frustration our communities are experiencing, we have to support  Kamala Harris to advance our anti-war goals and prevent even worse policies at home and abroad.

[...]

With fundamental democratic values in danger around the world, supporting Jill Stein or "abandoning Harris" is a decision many of us will come to regret. We cannot afford to sit this election out or exercise our vote for someone who will not win. If we do, we are giving our power away and getting nothing in return. Every vote for a third party will help deliver the presidency to Trump. Voting for Kamala Harris is the only way to keep Trump from returning to the White House.
