NYT: MoveOn’s Rahna Epting Sounds the Alarm on Third-Party Presidential Threat

Washington, D.C. – Today, MoveOn Political Action Executive Director Rahna Epting was quoted in a piece from the New York Times, sounding the alarm on how third-party candidates pose a clear and present danger to Vice President Kamala Harris’s election efforts in the final stretch of the campaign. The piece also covers MoveOn’s efforts to mitigate third-party spoilers, which have already torpedoed No Label’s GOP-funded bid and helped drive Robert F. Kennedy Jr. out of the race.

Epting relayed that the stakes are sky-high. She said, “The presidential race could very well come down to a few thousand votes in a handful of states. These third-party candidates — they still remain a big threat this cycle.”

The New York Times noted that Stein's candidacy in 2016 helped elect Donald Trump. “In 2016, Ms. Stein won 31,072 votes in Wisconsin — greater than the 22,748-vote margin by which Mr. Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the state — and many Democrats blame her for their defeat.”

The New York Times also covered MoveOn’s general election program, noting, “Ms. Epting said her organization was now focused increasingly on one-on-one voter outreach to encourage people to support Ms. Harris.”

Epting added, “The more we engage the voters, especially hard-to-reach voters on this election, and talk to them about Kamala Harris’s agenda for this country, that is an incredibly effective strategy.”

MoveOn’s efforts have also included holding Jill Stein and Cornel West accountable for willingly working with Republicans and Trump allies in a nationwide scheme – potentially illegally – to bypass election laws. Epting said, “They are not a safe place to park your protest vote.”
